The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
